The Indian government and Navy are working together to reconstruct an ancient stitched ship, reminiscent of the vessels that sailed India’s old maritime trade routes. Once completed, the Indian Navy will undertake a unique voyage along these traditional routes using ancient navigation techniques. The keel-laying ceremony for the ship will take place in Goa, with various officials, including the Union Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs, in attendance. This initiative aims to revive India’s rich maritime tradition and is seen as a symbol of the nation’s shipbuilding legacy.

Extensive research and consultation with subject matter experts have been crucial in the conceptualization of this ambitious project, which involves collaboration across multiple ministries. The Navy is overseeing the design and construction of the ship, while the Ministry of Culture has provided full funding. The Ministry of Shipping and Ministry of External Affairs will support the project to ensure the smooth execution of the international voyage. The project was approved by the National Implementation Committee and a tripartite agreement was signed for the construction of the ship. Traditional shipwrights led by Babu Sankaran will undertake the stitching work, using traditional methods to shape the wooden planks and join them with cords or ropes sealed with coconut fibre, resin, and fish oil.

This project represents a significant effort to bring India’s cultural and civilisational heritage back to life. It showcases the country’s ancient maritime trade routes and shipbuilding practices. The collaboration between the government, Navy, and various ministries demonstrates a commitment to preserving and celebrating India’s rich maritime history. The reconstructed stitched ship will serve as a symbol of national pride and will embark on a voyage that honors the traditions of the past.
